The Benefits Of Aluminium Anodising
You may have heard of a concept referred to as aluminium anodising. Although the results of this technique can be seen on a nearly daily basis, very few are aware of the associated benefits. What are a handful of advantages associated with aluminium anodising and why has this process proven to be so valuable in regards to modern applications?, and why this is useful within the Aluminium Extrusion industry
Anodising was originally referred to as “anodic oxidation”; a term signifying a process involving electricity. Through an electrochemical treatment, an additional layer (known as an oxide) forms on the surface of aluminium. One of the most interesting facts is that no other chemicals are needed to apply this layer. Now that we have a basic understanding of the theory behind aluminium anodising, what benefits does it provide?
A Flexible Appeal
It can be argued that the main advantage is that the layer of oxide is fully integrated within the substrate (the existing aluminium). Thus, it is durable and highly resistant to wear and tear. Another observation is that this layer of oxide can be applied at various thicknesses depending upon the intended application. These layers are normally measured in microns. Thicknesses of up to 25 microns may be employed when the aluminium will be exposed to harsh conditions (such as if it will be placed within saltwater or it needs to be protected from chemical irritants).
A Permanent Solution
There are many other treatment options which tend to break down over time. Even hard-wearing veneers and industrial-grade paints will eventually weaken. This is not the case when referring to anodised aluminium. This option therefore represents an excellent long-term solution; very important if maintenance issues need to be avoided.
More than Physical Benefits Alone
There is no doubt that the durable nature of anodised aluminium is an attractive quality. However, many individuals overlook the fact that anodised aluminium provides a very attractive finish. There are even cases when various colours can be embedded within the top layer. This requires the addition of chemicals during the anodising process and this can be a great way to achieve a specific finish.
